College Application Essays

College Student (verify)

For many college applicants, the hardest part of going through the process is writing the essay. How does one even begin to take on the task of encapsulating and crystallizing a lifetime’s worth of personal experience into only about 500 words? I certainly found this task daunting, so I was grateful when somebody turned me towards the folks at Harrington Writing Professionals. They worked with me through every draft of the essay and helped me not only with fundamental grammar and spelling problems but also with how to use the essay format to my advantage, among many other things. Today, I’ma college junior, and I still carry the lessons I learned the specialists at Harrington Writing Professionals with me as I write everything from essays and papers to internship and graduate school applications. Knowing how to write well is important in all fields, and Harrington Writing Professionals will help you gain skills to last a lifetime.

Tutoring

Tatiana A., Business Writing (verify)

“Over a period of around 6 months in 2007, David was hired by my employer to be my English tutor. David was extremely important to help me improve my written English skills. After this period I felt very comfortable in writing business e-mails and reports to my Board and business partners. I also received very positive feedback by my boss and people that I worked with. I highly recommend David – he knows the appropriate English style to use with different audiences and makes it accessible to learn. Moreover he is a pleasant person to work with.”

David Harrington is an amazing professor. He really wants you to learn how to write. He is really chill and down to earth, and his high standards really end up being effective. Don’t worry about the grade — Professor Harrington really cares about how you progress in your writing. He is impressed by people who work hard, because he works hard too. And his grading is pretty clear — he lets you know beforehand exactly what he is looking for.

If you want help with your writing, talk to him! Or, go to the Writing Center in Philosophy Hall.

I guarantee that by the end of the semester, you will be happy that you got to learn from this incredible writer. And if you get the chance, talk to him. He’s actually a very cool character.

Workload: Standard Uwriting workload — 4 essays, but many drafts so that you can perfect your work over time. Oh, and he lets you resubmit any paper you didn’t do well on and regrades it. Awesome!

Web Writing

Kate Edgar, Editor, researcher, manager, Oliver Sacks, MD (verify)

“As executive assistant and editor for Oliver Sacks, M.D., the physician and writer, I have worked with David Harrington over the last year. David was responsible for creating a website at Columbia University devoted to Dr. Sacks’s accomplishments and activities at Columbia. David was an excellent person for this job, because he is extremely intelligent, he thinks fast, and he has great ideas. He is an ingenious researcher and immersed himself thoroughly in the content for the site, then designed a handsome format which is at once user-friendly, logically organized, and packed full of information and resources. He wrote a good deal of material for the website, and came to understand and present the subtleties of the material as well as anyone I’ve yet come across in twenty-five years. He was efficient and a pleasure to work with. I recommend him most highly.”
